This is 254 carat “Jubilee Diamond”, double the weight of “Koh-e-Noor” diamond in size and weight.
Her husband presented this on a marriage anniversary. The lady is ‘Mehrbai Tata’, wife of Jamshedji Tata’s elder son Sir Dorabji Tata.
In 1924 when there was recession in the world and the Tata company (TISCO) did not have money to pay employees, lady Mehrbai mortgaged this precious Jubilee Diamond to the Imperial Bank for Rs1crore so that employees continue to get salary and the company continues to run.
After her untimely death from blood cancer, Sir Dorabji Tata established Tata Memorial Cancer Research Foundation by selling this diamond for better treatment of cancer patients in India.
Many people are not even aware of the history of what gives us life!
The irony is, glorifying the Taj Mahal as a love monument.
